January is Here

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

Man it is freakin’ freezing today, but luckily warmer weather is on the way soon…

It  was so cold last night here in Indy (3 degrees when I looked) that I woke up solely because it was cold in my house.  Man, I don’t know how those of you much further North do it and I tip my hat to you.

Winter Weather Update

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

During yesterday’s storm, a total of 3.4 inches of snowfall was measured at the National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis.  So that means they were on target with their final 2-4″ prediction.  The low was off though, as it was 12 degrees when I woke up this morning and freakin’ freezin’.  (The coffee is about to go on.)

The forecast has changed yet again for tonight and tomorrow, with more snow and possibly some rain and freezing rain on the way.  Right now we have some “freezing fog” and have mostly ice left over from yesterday, so hopefully when it warms up tomorrow the ice will melt away.

No such luck on a decent “play snow”, but that usually doesn’t occur until January around here anyway.

Meteorologists: Modern Day Fortune Tellers

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

I have a theory that I’ve been developing that equates Meteorologists to modern day fortune tellers/psychics. Under the guise of “science” of course. That may seem a bit “out there”, but consider these points:

  1. Both predict the future
  2. Both are often wrong (from what I’ve heard anyway)
  3. Both still get paid regardless of their predictions

What got me going today was the snow prediction from yesterday compared to today…

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not against the weatherman. But I think it’s a little silly to expect them to tell us what the weather is going to be like 15 days from now when they often can’t tell us what the weather will be like tomorrow beyond a temperature range that is based on the average for that day over the past hundred and some years. (Summer forecasts are far more accurate than winter ones from my observations.)

So with that said, I’ll have my shovel handy in the event that we do get a few inches of snow (the last I heard was to expect 2-4 inches by noon tomorrow). But I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we either get very little snow or we get 4-6 inches (or more). It has been known to happen. Let’s sit back and see what the outcome really is.

The Four Letter “S” Word, Snow

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

It looks like it’s going to start to “feel” like Christmastime and winter this week…

I’m not sure I’m ready for the snow shoveling and crazy drivers, but I could go for some sledding and snowman building with the kiddos.
