Kim Clijsters Wins U.S. Open Women’s Title
Via my Wall Street Journal alerts:
Kim Clijsters of Belgium made history, capping a comeback from two years out of tennis to become the first unseeded woman to win the U.S. Open — and the first mom to win a major since 1980 — with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over ninth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.
That is awesome in my opinion.
It never occurred to me before about the players having families while playing (it just seems that most don’t, especially in tennis where many are so young), but it makes sense that would be the case since females would be required to sit out during a pregnancy and for a while after birth.
The not being seeded comment really isn’t a fair comparison to previous unseeded players. Sure, she’s been out of the game for a few years and just picked back up a few weeks ago, but this is someone who has won the U.S. Open before and made the Australian Open & French Open finals before. Not to mention she was ranked #1 in the past.
