Juan Martin del Potro Wins U.S. Open

Via  Wall Street Journal alerts:

Juan Martin del Potro has ended Roger Federer’s run of dominance at the U.S. Open, stunning the top-ranked Swiss great in five sets to win in his first Grand Slam final.

The 20-year-old Argentine prevailed 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 to snap Federer’s streak of five straight U.S. Open titles. The sixth-seeded del Potro had been 0-6 in his career against Federer.

I had this four plus hour match on this afternoon/evening and have to say that del Potro really earned this one and played like he wanted it. Federer just seemed laid back, then got flustered and started razzing the chair ump (cussing, but not a Serena type tantrum).  There’s no doubt Federer is one of the best of all time, but he just wasn’t on his game in the final.
